Like a Phoenix Rising from the Ash

Founded in 1983, the Phoenix Theatre is a leading not-for-profit performing arts company. Their new facility captures its unique identity by featuring raw, spartan materials, exposed structure, pre-cast concrete that has been recycled and intense pops of saturated color to guide patrons throughout the building.

Impact

After outgrowing its space in a converted church building, the Phoenix sought to create an expanded, permanent facility to call home. Now located on a highly visible downtown site, the new venue anchors the emerging district and serves as a catalyst for revitalization through the arts.

Exterior

Located on a highly visible downtown site, the building’s main façade faces along the adjacent Indianapolis Cultural Trail. It is designed to keep out the noise from thousands of cars traveling down Illinois Street while making the most of even quieter sounds from the stage.

Pops of Color

A gallery of intense pops of saturated color guide patrons throughout the building.

Gender Neutral Restrooms

This space was one of the first in Indiana to receive a building variance for public multigender bathrooms, employing 10 unisex stalls with floor-to-ceiling doors and shareable sinks are located just off the lobby.

Black Box

Two performance spaces (black box and main stage) provide the capability to stage two shows at once, a first for the organization.
