Situated between two event plazas, the narrow building is entered at street level, with most of the programmed space (including the primary wellness area, fitness studios, and locker rooms) located below grade and bound by the existing 1950s structure that could not be altered. To counteract this challenging layout, a series of sculptural, decorative stairs connect and bring daylight to all three levels of the facility.
With a burgeoning tech industry attracting growing numbers of young professionals to downtown Raleigh, the YMCA challenged RATIO to envision an entirely new facility model and aesthetic environment programmed to serve the needs and desires of the emerging demographic. In a recently revitalized former bank building, the YMCA returns to the city center for the first time since the early 1970s.
